Here’s how to check if your PAN is active or not activate 

         Recently, Minister of State for Finance Santos Kumar Gangwar in a written reply informed the Rajya Sabha that as on July 27, 11,44,211 PANs have been identified and deleted or De-activated in cases where multiple PAN were found allotted to one person.
          A person cannot hold more than one PAN. A penalty of Rs. 10,000 is liable to be imposed under section B 272 of the Income-tax Act, 1961 for having more than one PAN.
If a persons has been allotted more than one PAN then he should immediately surrender the additional PAN card(s).

  Here how to check if your PAN is active or not

Step 1:Individual will have to first have to visit the Income Tax Department’s website https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/e-Filing/Services/KnowYourPanLinkGS.html) and then go to the ‘Services’ tab in the homepage.

  •      Step 2:Once the next page open, individuals will have to fill in the necessary details which includes their name, age, gender, date of birth, status, registered mobile number and then click on ‘submit’.
        In case an individual's has over one PAN cards , a notice will be displayed.

    * Enter OTP

    * Result page shows PAN and jurisdiction officer address and active/inactive status

    Just in case, you have forgotten the PAN or want to locate the jurisdiction officer address, the linabove may help you in locating them.
    The facility to be delete or De-activate the PAN is available with the Assessing Officer through application software.
    During 2004 to 2007 also, an exercise for de-duplication of PAN was conduct in the tax department to identify probable duplicate PAN.

     Why need to PAN deactivation by Income Tax Department?

    The Income Tax Department is conducting a drive to deactivate PAN from income tax accesses who have been given multiple PAN cards. Ideally, an individual is supposs to have only 1 PAN. Many people have many PAN cards either with or without their knowledge.
    Due to duplication the government of India has deactivated more than 11 lakh PAN cards. In additions to this, over 1,500 PAN cards have been identified as fake as they were provided to either an individual with a false identity or to non-existing individuals. Accordings to the Indian law, an individual cannot have more than one PAN card and having one attracts a fine of Rs.10,000 under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act of 1961.
